District Sector Visits Review summary

As part of its monitoring function the Commission visits each DHB every two years.

In late 2010 the Commission contracted Partnership Works Ltd to undertake a review of its current District Sector Visit process.

The purpose of the review was to ensure these visits were the most efficient and effective way to undertake the Commission’s function of monitoring the mental health and addiction strategy.

A confidential report was submitted to the Board of the Commission.  This only endorsed the importance of an independent body such as the Commission.  It also contained some useful feedback on how to improve the visits.

This is a summary of that report.

The Commission is extremely grateful to the individuals and organisations who responded to the survey or took part in the interviews.

The Commission has already implemented some of the recommendations in the review including:

  •     making the feedback after the visit available on the website
  •     including primary mental health services and other sectors such as housing and justice
  •     establishing an internal mechanism to combine all the information recorded
  •     using the Consumer and Family Advisors to elicit feedback from consumers and families.

We plan to implement more of the recommendations for the remaining visits in 2011/12.
