Mental Health Professionals and Patient Information - Guidance Notes for Agencies in the Mental Health Sector, September 1997
Prepared by the office of the Privacy Commissioner, these guidance notes are based on the Health Information Privacy Code 1994 and the Privacy Act 1993. They refer to or paraphrase provisions from these and other enactments, and it is recommended they be used in conjunction with the Code. 30 pages main document. Prepared by Laurie Curtis, Center for Community Change, Trinity College of Vermont, this discussion paper was sponsored by the Commission to inform the development of a National Blueprint for Mental Health Services. The paper provides an overview of some of the best international practices in rehabilitation and recovery, identifies core 'best practices', and describes some of the exemplary programmes providing rehabilitation and recovery support services. Early Intervention and Prevention in New Zealand - Workshop May 28-29 Dunedin, June 1997
The overall aim of the workshop was to produce a source document on early intervention mental health services to assist with, for example, the Blueprint and the strategy for workforce development. The main areas reported on are workforce development, service coordination and funding/resources. A consensus statement from the NZ Early Intervention Interest Group is included, along with a paper from the Dandenong Hospital Department of Psychiatry about home-based treatment for first-episode psychosis. 35 pages. Discrimination Against People with Experiences of Mental Illness, July 1997 (PDF, 146kb)
This report was commissioned to help identify areas in which the Commission could work to achieve its priority of reducing discrimination and prejudice. It focuses on discrimination facing mental health consumers directly, and on discrimination faced by mental health consumers in the community. Discrimination stories are included. 49 pages.

Rehabilitation / Recovery: an integrated focus for Mental Health Services in New Zealand, Chris Harris: 1997
This paper develops an understanding of the concept of recovery, by bringing together opinions - 'a snapshot of stakeholder views about best practices' - from different stakeholder groups within New Zealand, and internationally, to help build a view of appropriate rehabilitation/recovery strategies. The resulting recommendations are outlined. 62 pages.
